Music Lessons and academic Tutoring in Gainesville, FL and online

About Your Teacher

Hi! I’m Chris Swanson of Swansong Worship. I’m passionate about helping students of all ages discover the joy and benefits of learning through personalized, one-on-one music lessons and academic tutoring.

My greatest strength as a teacher is helping students truly “get it.” I take time to understand each student’s unique personality, strengths, and goals so I can guide them with the right balance of challenge and encouragement. This individualized approach helps students build lasting confidence in their creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills.

I bring experience working with students of many different ages, learning styles, and abilities. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of South Florida and graduating summa cum laude, I worked in general education teaching English and Reading classes. Additionally, I have also worked in special education as a Paraeducator in ASD classrooms, and I have trained under board-certified supervision as a Behavioral Therapist supporting students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.

With over 20 years of private music teaching experience and more than a decade serving as a Worship Director, I’ve taught students as young as four and as old as ninety-five. Whether you’re interested in guitar, ukulele, drums, songwriting, reading, or writing, I create lessons tailored to your goals, learning style, and schedule.

I provide music lessons and academic tutoring in-person in Gainesville, FL or online, and Swansong Worship is a Step Up For Students approved vendor for UA, PEP, and FTC-FES-EO Scholarships.

My Teaching Philosophy

“The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried.”

This quote is one of the foundations of my teaching style. Your student will likely hear me say this at least once (likely far more times) over the course of our lessons. It conveys a philosophy my mentor calls the spirit of excellence. In this approach, I help the student to understand the difference between excellence and perfection.

Students discover that developing a spirit of excellence contributes to internal wholeness that makes growth more achievable with less pressure. Conversely, students learn that an unhealthy fixation on perfection, ironically, hinders them from being their best selves.

More simply, students learn their personal worth is not contingent on how well they perform on an instrument or a test.

As self-confidence is built with a spirit of excellence, I also help students discover their unique learning style. In this process, lessons are adapted to fit each student’s personality, goals and interests. We explore studying and practice methods that make sense to the student so that lesson content can be internalized rather than merely emulated.

Ultimately, relationship is at the center of my teaching approach. I want to know my students well enough that I can equip them to feel safe asking questions and making mistakes, to know that growth is possible, and to believe that they have value no matter what. With this approach, your student’s success is inevitable.

What I Teach

Guitar (Acoustic, Electric, Bass)

Learn the notes of the fretboard, chords, strumming patterns, scales and more. Students will gain a basic understanding of music theory that builds into a stronger working knowledge for soloing and improvisation. Additionally, students learn to read chord charts, tabs, and sheet music fundamentals.

Ukulele

Fun, accessible, and great for all ages, especially younger students new to stringed instruments. Students learn chords, strumming patterns, and even singing while playing.

Drums & Percussion

Discover the backbone of the band. Percussion students use body drumming and portable instruments (shaker, tambourine, etc.) while learning to play and read different rhythms. Drum students work on the drum set to learn to play and read basic beats, rudiments, and four-way coordination.

Audio Recording & Engineering

Learn to record yourself or your band using Logic Pro, Ableton, or your preferred DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). Topics include microphone choice and placement, recording techniques, mixing and mastering.

Songwriting

Turn your ideas into complete, polished songs. We’ll work together on lyrics, melody, structure, meter, and rhythm to learn how these elements work together to create stronger, more impactful music.

Academic Tutoring in Reading

Students strengthen their reading comprehension and fluency by focusing on decoding, phonics, and vocabulary development, with the ultimate goal of helping them find joy in reading.

Academic Tutoring in writing

Students become better writers by learning to organize their ideas, build strong paragraphs, express thoughts with clarity, and apply proper grammar. Lessons emphasize practical skills that help them communicate confidently and effectively through the written word.
